Siyakhana is addressing food security through an integrated, multi-sectoral and a transdisciplinary approach enabling personal and community wellbeing.  Siyakhana is growing and selling a variety of organic food through innovative methods, materials and ICT systems. Its ago-ecology design is replicable and promotes efficient use of resources while generating income.

Siyakhana offers enriching personal and group team building experiences and environmental awareness through ecotourism, promoting greater understanding and appreciation for agro-ecology, nature, local society and culture.

Eco-Inclusive Impacts

Siyakhana’s impact on society and the environment includes creating awareness and generating research regarding food and nutrition security, general and environmental health and urban farming with government, corporates, schools, universities and the public.

  • Through its activities, contribute to positive socio-economic, educational and health improvements in impoverished communities, especially the women, youth and unemployed within them
  • Raising awareness on farming and using land, soil and infrastructure in an environmentally responsible manner
  • Addressing climate change mitigation using sustainable energy such as an organic waste biodigester
  • Creating jobs and providing a living for its staff through sales of produces and other income generating streams
  • Boost its own income through accredited training courses and ecotourism

Partners

Siyakhana functions as a change agent across South Africa improving food and nutrition security and developing new enterprises. Siyakhana promotes, supports and offers training to smallholder farmers addressing the water/energy/food nexus, thereby contributing to socio-economic, environment & health development.

Solidaridad works in close partnership with Siyakhana regarding planning, implementation, and evaluation of community-based entrepreneurship and agricultural programmes.

The Power, Energy and Environment Technology Station (PEETS) at University of Johannesburg adds value to Siyakhana’s projects by offering expertise on water, energy and food nexus.
