Meat Naturally
Meat Naturally encourages management that mimics natural wildlife movements and embraces and adds dignity to rural lives by "modernising" traditional livestock management systems. By providing flexible but consistent market access, and enabling African communal farmers to capitalise on market prices without incurring market risks.
Due to the relative resilience of grassland and savannah systems, Meat Naturally’s efforts can build community and national food security and climate adaptation support in less than a decade, and in some cases, within only a few years. Benefits will be sustained through market access innovations of mobile auctions and mobile meat processing units that operate in communal areas.
- Providing famers income and access to improved ecosystem services (water quality/quantity, soil nutrient cycling, flood retention, etc.)
- Ensure female and youth participation
- Creating opportunities for 1,500+ herders to reduce wildlife-livestock conflict and to regenerate landscapes, water catchments and conservation areas that are critical for climate resilience
- Supporting client groups to restore and conserve at least 1,000,000ha of high biodiversity
- Seeking to develop similar successful business units for encouraging participation by poorer households in small stock markets
- Ensuring livestock market access for communal farmers who live in Foot and Mouth Disease zones where obstacles to trade are prohibitive and drive rangeland degradation
Partners
Conservation South Africa was the founder and initial incubator of Meat Naturally. It pioneers research and tools that Meat Naturally adopts and shares with other clients as a way of sustainably amplifying impact to other areas facing similar conservation challenges
Peace Parks Foundation & Conservation International entered into an MOU with MN in January 2018 to co-invest in growing a Herding for Health programme in Southern Africa's Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) across 5 countries.
