Renewable energy briquettes from waste coffee husks
Kyaffe trains women smallholder coffee farmers to produce renewable energy briquettes from waste coffee husks. The enterprise is implemented by the women themselves with backing from Kyaffe Farmers Coffee as well as support from the Consortium for enhancing University Responsiveness to Agribusiness Development (CURAD) for mentoring and training.
Product sales help women boost their household incomes in addition to providing long-lasting, cleaner and environmentally-friendly alternative to firewood and charcoal.
Stop Hunger provides financial sponsorship for briquette-making training in ten coffee growing districts in Uganda.
Consortium for enhancing University Responsiveness to Agribusiness Development (CURAD) is an agribusiness incubator that provides mentoring, capacity building and location to sell the briquettes.
The SEED Low Carbon Awards 2019 in Ghana, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Thailand and Uganda are sponsored by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
