Green Ventures

Manufacturing organic fertiliser from organic waste in rural Malawi
2019 SEED Africa Award Finalist Sustainable Agriculture Mzuzu, Malawi

Green Ventures collects organic wastes from smallholder farmers and households for recycling via composting into high quality organic fertiliser. It then sells the nutrient-rich, eco-friendly, safe and affordable organic fertiliser back to smallholder farmers as an alternative to chemical and environmentally-harmful fertilisers which acidify soils in the long-term.

The enterprise partners with organic wastes suppliers, local NGOs, and intends to work with government field extension officers to enhance the opportunity for smallholder farmers to practice sustainable, eco-friendly agriculture.

Eco-Inclusive Impacts

Green Ventures has employed three people, collected and recycled over 3 tonnes of organic waste from over 67 local farms and households.
  • Providing employment for three youth
  • Creating market access for organic waste collection for over 67 local smallholder farmers and households

  • Collecting over three tonnes of organic wastes from local farms and households
  • Selling over 68 bags of organic fertiliser to smallholder farmers

  • Increasing harvest turnovers for 17 smallholder farmers of which 13 are female while reducing fertiliser costs by 35% on average
  • Enabling over 67 farmers and local households to generate an average of 13.8 US dollars per month from farm wastes

This enterprise is supported through its partnerships with various stakeholders, ranging from national and international organisations, investors, research institutes, suppliers, governmental bodies, NGOs, other social and environmental enterprises and more.

Agricentre is a marketing agency that provides information, awareness-raising and sensitisation on the benefits of organic fertiliser to smallholder farmers.

Umoza Sunflower Cooperative supplies Green Ventures with sunflower cake, a nutrient-rich leftover from sunflower oil extraction for organic fertiliser production.
