Waste to Food, a SEED Story from South Africa
Waste to Food recycles food waste into high quality organic products. Commercial food waste is processed using industrial composting technology, the partially stabilised organics are then converted into high-quality earthworm compost. The earthworm composting component is operated under a franchise model. By offering an alternative to landfill disposal, Waste to Food decreases carbon emissions, builds soil fertility and structure, reduces chemical fertiliser and plant pest & disease control inputs, and increases income generation for local communities.
The enterprise has won a SEED South Africa Award in 2014. This Award was supported by the European Union, which is made up of 28 Member States who have decided to gradually link together their know-how, resources and destinies. Development of this SEED Story was made possible through the generous support of the Government of Flanders, which is active in Southern Africa.
