Mundawathu Gardens

Improving productivity and resilience of soil for last-mile farmers
2023 SEED Climate Adaptation Award Sustainable Agriculture Lilongwe, Malawi

Mundawathu Gardens makes revenue by selling organic fertiliser, compost manure, soil conditioners, certified drought-resistant fruits, vegetables, and bamboo seedlings. They make these products accessible to most low-income farmers in the last mile, who otherwise could only afford chemical fertilisers. The enterprise also targets agriculture cooperatives and environmental stakeholders.

Eco-Inclusive Impacts

The enterprise contributes to climate adaptation by producing organic fertiliser from agricultural wastes and multiplying drought-resistant fruits, vegetables, and bamboo seedlings. They improve crop yields, reduce food losses due to climate change, promote environmental sustainability, and address poverty and malnutrition in communities.

Mundawathu Gardens contributes to reducing food insecurity by improving the resilience of crops and empowering last-mile smallholder farmers and communities by increasing their income. The business uses agricultural waste to make organic fertiliser, improving soil health. They also contribute to afforestation by planting over 100,000 hectares of trees (2023), absorbing greenhouse gases.
