Virgin Green Renewable Energy Ltd

Providing clean charcoal briquettes and energy-saving cook stoves
2023 SEED Climate Adaptation Award Clean Energy Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia

Virgin Green Renewable Energy commercialises and promotes clean cooking by recycling biomass wastes and biodegradable municipal wastes into clean cooking solid fuels called charcoal briquettes. They also promote energy efficiency through the production of improved energy-saving cook stoves that use less fuel and reduce carbon emissions.

Their main customers are household kitchens from low-income families who still depend on traditional cookstoves, lump charcoal, and firewood as the only affordable cooking fuels.

Eco-Inclusive Impacts

The enterprise contributes to climate adaptation by reducing carbon emissions, promoting sustainable cooking practices, and minimising deforestation associated with traditional charcoal production, thus mitigating climate change impacts.

Virgin Green Renewable Energy provides sustainable alternatives to charcoal and firewood, which reduce indoor pollution in around 100 households and prevent the cutting down of over 12,000 adult trees. Their production of wood vinegar contributes to soil regeneration and restoration. Additionally, the company distributes 3,000 energy-saving cook stoves, preventing over 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

They promote economic development by offering employment to over 200 people and increasing income for local sales agents, all while promoting a circular economy by adding value to waste.
