Inspiring Climate Adaptation Stories from Zambia, Botswana & Malawi
Across Africa, climate change poses a formidable challenge to society and various industries, yet it also inspires creative and innovative solutions to this problem. At SEED, we are committed to supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which can bring some of the most unique and effective solutions through establishing climate adaptation approaches, which are so necessary right now. With that in mind we have taken a look at success stories of enterprises from Zambia, Botswana and Malawi, which show inspiring resilience despite the challenges that they are facing.
Embracing climate adaptation strategies is a smart and proactive approach for SMEs to mitigate risks, enhance operational efficiency, and safeguard their long-term viability. These case studies provide valuable insights into how diverse businesses can integrate climate resilience into their operations, highlighting innovative solutions and sharing varied perspectives on sustainable adaptation. Our featured enterprises illustrate the potential of SMEs to not only survive but thrive in the face of climate challenges, while making significant contributions to their communities.
What we’ve learned from the enterprises:
Forest Africa Zambia Limited – 2023 SEED Climate Adaptation Award Winner, is applying a zero-waste philosophy to wild fruit collection, all they use all parts of the baobab fruit. Additionally, some seeds are reserved for reforestation. Forest Africa reveals that wild fruit collection can become an alternative to farming jobs, as wild fruits do not need pesticides and are already resilient to the local conditions. Viva Organica – 2023 SEED Climate Adaptation Award Runner-up, uses organic waste to produce biofertilizers that increase the water retention and draught tolerance in crops. Their experience exemplifies how combining waste management practices with organic farming strengthens the community and provides alternatives more sustainable approaches to farming. Tac-Maz Sustainable Ventures – 2021 SEED Climate Adaptation Award Runner-up supports vulnerable communities in overcoming climate effects and recovering quickly through teaching sustainable farming practices. They show how teaching the most affected communities, such as female farmers, helps to make recovery processes much more feasible and build resilience in the community. Watch the video here.
