Food and Trees for Africa, a SEED Story from South Africa

“Food & Trees for Africa” is a social enterprise addressing sustainable development through greening, climate change and food security programs. Started in 1990, FTFA has distributed over 3.8 million trees, facilitated the creation of over 2 500 organic food gardens for the poorest in South Africa and launched the first carbon calculator and the Carbon Protocol in this country.

The enterprise has won a SEED Award in 2010. This 2010 SEED Award in South Africa was supported by the European Union, which is made up of 28 Member States who have decided to gradually link together their know-how, resources and destinies. Development of this SEED Story was made possible by the Government of Flanders, which is active in Southern Africa.

SEED was founded by UNEP, UNDP, and IUCN at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. It is hosted at Adelphi Research, in Germany. SEED identifies and supports promising small scale social and environmental enterprises around the globe, which while working towards a greener economy also tackle poverty, marginalisation and social exclusion. SEED provides these enterprises with know-how and networks, taking the lessons learnt at local level up to decision-makers to promote evidence-based policy making.
